Immunology / Innate immunity
Workpackage 4 (WP4) is concerned with the identification of virulence factors that determine avian influenza virus pathogenesis and transmissibility, focussing on the interaction of HPAI and LPAI viruses with the innate immune system. These studies will analyse the requirements of the virus to adapt to its host and to interact with the different cellular compartments of the innate defence system, in particular dendritic cells (DC), macrophages (MΦ) and natural killer (NK) cells. The focus will be on the role of early innate immune responses, in particular inflammatory cytokine, interferon (IFN) responses and natural killer (NK) cell responses Furthermore, investigations determining the influence of molecular characteristics of the HA, the polymerase proteins and NS1 will be performed.
